Virgin Australia was founded in 2000 as low-cost carrier Virgin Blue and later expanded into a broader airline. After entering voluntary administration in 2020 it was acquired by Bain Capital, and it returned to the Australian Securities Exchange in June 2025. Qatar Airways holds a minority stake, and under a partnership launched in June 2025 Qatar Airways operates long-haul flights to Doha on Virgin Australia's behalf.
The airline is headquartered in Brisbane, with main hubs at Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne and secondary hubs at Adelaide and Perth. Its own fleet of roughly 100 aircraft is made up of Boeing 737s. It flies throughout Australia and to short-haul international destinations such as Bali, Fiji, Vanuatu and Queenstown.
