Hainan Airlines traces its origins to 1989 in Hainan province and is headquartered in Haikou. After the bankruptcy restructuring of former parent HNA Group in 2021, control passed to Liaoning Fangda Group, making it one of China's few large airlines that is not state-controlled. It is not in a global alliance and works through codeshare partnerships.
The airline operates a fleet of roughly 230 aircraft, including Boeing 787s and Airbus A330s on long-haul routes. Its hubs include Beijing Capital, Haikou, Chongqing, Shenzhen and Xi'an. From Beijing it serves North American cities such as Boston, Seattle, Toronto and Vancouver, as well as European destinations including Manchester, Brussels, Dublin and Oslo.
