Overview
Cancún occupies a slender, 7-shaped barrier island—the Hotel Zone—wedged between the Caribbean Sea and the Nichupté Lagoon, with the city proper on the mainland. Resorts line the beaches from Playa Langosta near the north end down to Punta Nizuc, and the eastern stretches face open sea with bigger waves and powder-white sand. Downtown, known as El Centro, is where locals eat, with taquerías around Parque de las Palapas and handicrafts at Mercado 28.
The real appeal is how much lies within an hour or two. Ferries from Puerto Juárez and the Hotel Zone reach Isla Mujeres, with its golf-cart-friendly streets and Playa Norte. South along the Riviera Maya are Puerto Morelos's reef, the cenotes along the Ruta de los Cenotes, Playa del Carmen and the clifftop ruins of Tulum. Chichén Itzá, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, is a long but popular day trip inland, and the Tren Maya now links the region by rail.
Few international beach destinations are easier to reach from North America. Airports and getting into town
ADO buses depart from the terminals to downtown Cancún's ADO terminal in about 25 minutes and to Playa del Carmen in about an hour. Authorized airport taxis and pre-booked shared or private shuttles reach the Hotel Zone in about 20–30 minutes. A connecting shuttle runs to the Tren Maya's Cancún Airport station for trains toward Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Mérida.
Best time to visit
December through April is the dry season, with sunny, less humid weather and the calmest seas, though it's also the busiest and most expensive time, especially around the holidays and US spring break. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, with the highest risk from August through October. Sargassum seaweed can wash up on east-facing beaches, most often from spring through summer. Whale shark tours from Isla Mujeres and Holbox run roughly June to mid-September.
