GOL Linhas Aereas overview
GOL was founded in 2000 and began flying in January 2001. Since 2022 it has been controlled by Abra Group, which also owns Avianca. GOL filed for Chapter 11 in January 2024 and emerged in June 2025; talks on a combination with Azul ended in September 2025.
The airline flies a fleet of around 140 aircraft, almost all Boeing 737 variants, in an economy-focused layout. In July 2026 it began its first long-haul route, Rio de Janeiro to New York JFK, using a leased Airbus A330 with a business cabin, and it has ordered Airbus A330-900s for further long-haul growth. Its network covers about 80 destinations in Brazil, South America, the Caribbean and the US.
