Azul was founded in 2008 by David Neeleman and grew into one of Brazil's largest airlines by serving many smaller cities. It filed for Chapter 11 in May 2025 and emerged in February 2026 after cutting debt and raising new equity, including investments of about US$100 million each from United Airlines and American Airlines. Merger talks with GOL ended in 2025.
Azul's fleet of about 175 aircraft mixes Embraer E-Jets, Airbus A320neo-family jets, ATR turboprops and around 10 Airbus A330 widebodies. Its hubs are Campinas-Viracopos, Belo Horizonte-Confins and Recife, and it serves more than 130 destinations. Long-haul flights use A330s with a business cabin.
