Overview
Doha has grown from a pearling and fishing port into a compact capital that is easy to explore in a few days. The seven-kilometer Corniche curves around Doha Bay, linking the stone-and-glass Museum of Islamic Art, with its views of the West Bay towers, to the wooden dhows moored along the waterfront. A short walk inland, Souq Waqif mixes spice and textile stalls, falcon shops, and courtyard cafés, while the rebuilt Msheireb Downtown next door is one of the city's most walkable districts.
Culture is the main draw. The National Museum of Qatar, designed by Jean Nouvel around interlocking discs inspired by the desert rose crystal, tells the country's story from Bedouin life to the oil era. Katara Cultural Village has an amphitheater, galleries, and a public beach, and the old Al Zubarah fort in the north is Qatar's UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Beyond the city, the dunes of the south lead to Khor Al Adaid, the Inland Sea, where sand meets saltwater and the only practical way in is a 4x4 tour with an experienced driver. Doha is also the hub for Qatar Airways, which flies nonstop from many North American cities, so a stopover of a night or two is an easy way to add the city to a longer trip to Asia or Africa.

Airports and getting into town
The Doha Metro Red Line runs from Hamad International Airport's station to Msheireb, where it connects to the Gold and Green lines, in roughly 20 minutes. Taxis run by Karwa wait outside arrivals, and Uber and Careem also serve the airport; the drive to West Bay or Souq Waqif usually takes 20 to 30 minutes outside rush hour. Most hotels can arrange transfers.
Best time to visit
November to March is the best time to visit, with warm, mostly dry days that suit the Corniche, the souq, and desert trips. From June to September, daytime highs regularly pass 40°C (104°F) with high humidity, so outdoor sightseeing is limited to early morning and evening. During Ramadan, whose dates shift each year, many restaurants close during daylight and evenings take on a festive, late-night rhythm.
